Records of 1673 speak of a navigational aid which consisted of a "raised metal pan filled with pitch and oakum, and set afire at night." Such was the beginning of the Morris Island LIght.  The first lighthouse was built in 1767 to guide ships approaching Charleston Harbor.  Subsequent towers were built in 1838 and 1876, the latter having withstood the 140 mph winds of Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
