The Gemini IV launch June 3, 1965, provided Ed White with the opportunity to become the first American to walk in space. A tether cable kept him from floating away and provided him with oxygen. While this extravehicular activity captured the imagination of the country, the primary mission of Gemini IV was for White and crew member James McDivitt to evaluate the effects of prolonged space flight.
