Fire Island Lighthouse was lit for the first time on Nov 1, 1858. It was originally painted a creamy yellow and didn't get its black and white bands until 33 years later.
In 1982 the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society was formed and 2 years later they added this lighthouse to the National Register of Historic Places.
