Union Army General Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War


Ulysses S Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822. A graduate of West Point, he served in the Mexican War. In 1854 he left the army to rejoin his family and became a farmer. He returned to duty in 1861, and commanded famous Union victories at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga. As commander of all Union Armies, he accepted the surrender of Robert E Lee's Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Grant later served two terms as US President (1869-1877)
