Robert E Lee was born on January 19, 1807, at Stratford, Virginia. He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point. When the Civil War began, Lee resigned his commission in the US Army and, after Virginia's secession, joined the Confederate army. Before the war ended, Lee's leadership skills had earned him command of all Confederate forces. After the war Lee became president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia, and spent the final years of his life as an educator.
