On the afternoon of April 9, 1865, General Robert E Lee officially surrendered to General Ulysses S Grant in the parlor of the McLean House at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. The house was owned by Wilmer McLean, who had moved his family from Manassas to avoid the destruction of the war only to have it end in his parlor. A reconstruction of the original house sits inside the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park.
