The Navy Blue & White pinstripe colored ribbon on this tree shows awareness for ALS, (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It's a disease that causes death of neurons which control voluntary muscles. It is also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease and MND, (motor neurone disease). Usually starts around the age of 60 and the average life expectancy once it starts is two to four years.
Only about 20,000 people are diagnosed with ALS per year but unfortunately there is no known cure. Medicine may extend life for a couple of months or noninvasive ventilation may result in improved quality and length of life. Symptoms include: stiff muscles, muscle twitching, weakness because of the muscles decreasing in size, resulting in loss of the ability to move, eat, speak and eventually breathe.
