"Pleasure wheels" have delighted riders since the 17th century. However, in 1893, an engineer from Pittsburgh, George Ferris, gave the modern day pleasure wheel its name when he designed and built a 250 foot diameter "wheel" for the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois.
