In 1872, the old Cape Henry Lighthouse was examined and large troubling cracks were found in the foundation. Six years, and many warnings later, Congress approved a new lighthouse to be built.
The New Cape Henry Lighthouse was completed and lit in 1881. The new light stands with the old light on the southernly Cape of the Chesapeake Bay, one of the most important shipping channels into the United States.
