In 1893, Chicago hosted the World's Columbian Exposition that showcased architecture, technology, art, and global culture. A the same time, Professor Federick Ward Putnam wrote an article in the Chicago Tribune suggesting a permanent location for the collections at the Exposition.  The Field Columbian Museum opened the following year.

in 1905, the board began the process of finding a more suitable home for the newly named "Field Museum of National History." On May 2, 1921, after a challenging process to construct the new building they opened the doors to what is now the Field Museum.
