Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá was the first Franciscan mission in The Californias.

In 1769, San Diego de Alcalá became the birthplace for Christianity in the west coast of the United States. 56-year-old Father Junípero Serra traveled from New Spain (Mexico) with the job of converting indigenous people to Christianity and secure them as loyal subjects of the Spanish Crown. The original location of the mission was overlooking the bay; however, it didn’t contain a reliable water source. It was moved after five years to a place that would be more suitable for growing crops. In 1775, disgruntled Diegueno Indigenous people rioted and burned the mission down which was replaced by a fortress mission in 1779.  Architects J. Marshall Miller and J. E. Loveless rebuilt the mission to its 1813 look in 1931.

Today you can enjoy the history that was preserved.

Look for Casper, our black cat mascot, enjoying the warm sun among the flowers! He's the sign of an authentic Cat's Meow.
