Founded in 1823, this was the last of the California missions to be established, number 21 on the El Camino Real. It was named after the Peruvian missionary Francis Solano. Unfortunately, Father Altimira was known for his mistreatment of the Indigenous people, which led to an attack on the mission. Later Father Fortuni restored the mission both physically and spiritually. Today, just five of the original 27 buildings still stand. A museum nestled in the old mission building provided insight into mission life and the Sonoma area.
