My inspiration for this Wilderness Santa ornament came from my travels to 6 western National Parks this summer.
I can just picture Santa smiling and taking a big sigh at the end of his deliveries in a lightly snow-covered woods.
When, what does he hear? Rustling, just behind him. He turns around to find an elk and bear meandering towards him. Within a few seconds they've nudged their heads under his hands for a very special Santa scritching.
Can you imagine that, too?
I wrote this poem on the back:
Santa’s favorite thing to do
Is visit the elk and bear and caribou.
The woods is where he feels at home
Even though the Earth he roams.
On Christmas Eve he travels the globe
Getting rid of his treasured load.
But when the sun begins to rise,
He’ll be in the woods, that’s no surprise.
We handcraft this Santa in our Wooster, Ohio workshop, within flight of Santa's sleigh. It's made from 3/4" thick wood with colorful details on the front and the poem (above) on the back.
Look closely, and you'll find Casper, my black cat mascot, playing in the pine tree (because, isn't that what cats do?)
