The mouth of the Niagara River, connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie has been a significant harbor since early colonial days when French fur traders used it.  In 1726, The French built Fort Niagara.  Constructed from sturdy limestone its Romanesque architecture may have been what gave it the nickname "French Castle."
