Robert Burns was born in the "Butt" or kitchen of this cottage on January 25, 1759 and spent there the first seven years of his life. From this humble beginning as a labourer's son, Burns progressed to become the toast of Edinburgh when his early love poems and country verses were published in 1787. The cottage at Alloway was built by the poet's father with his own hands.
