Have you been to the United States largest and the world’s third largest hot springs?

Back:

  • Grand Prismatic Spring is the remains of a super volcano that erupted 1-2 million years ago. It was named during the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 for its striking colors, but prior to that survey in 1839 fur trappers from the American Fur Company noted a “boiling lake” which is today thought to be the Grand Prismatic Spring. At depths of 160ft the Grand Prismatic Spring’s fantastic color is made up of microbial mats (bacteria growing between different surfaces). The blue area or center of the spring is the deepest and hottest at 160°F.  This environment creates a challenging place for most microorganisms to grow, so it stays a brilliant blue throughout the year. The cooler portions change color with the seasons depending on the life cycle of the bacteria, from a dark green in the winter to an orange and red in the summer.
