With the span of 4,200 feet, the bridge connects San Francisco to Marin County. Designed by engineer Joseph Strauss, it was opened to vehicle and foot traffic in May 1937. The central section is 260 feet above the water and when the fog rolls in only the 746-foot towers are visible above the fog.
