Highclere Castle, the centerpiece of television series and movie Downton Abbey, was transformed from a classical Georgian mansion in 1838 by the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon. It dominates its pastoral surroundings in a dramatic way and was the center of political and social life during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

During WWI the Castle was converted into a hospital by Almina, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon. The Castle also became a home for evacuee children during WWII. In 1922, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun, and today a fascinating Egyptian Exhibition is open throughout the cellars.

The current (8th) Earl and Countess of Carnarvon are involved in the Castle’s day to day life from special tours, charity events, concerts and more. The doors are open to visitors between 60 to 70 days a year. Check out www.highclerecastle.co.uk for all the happenings.

Look closely to find Casper, our black cat mascot, eavesdropping on conversations coming from inside the castle.
