The U.S. Brig Lawrence was named after Commodore Perry's friend, Captain James Lawrence. While Captain Lawrence was laying mortally wounded below the deck of U.S. Frigate Chesapeake in the June 1813 battle with the British frigate, Shannon... he reportedly ordered... "Don't give up the ship."
Then in August 1813 the U.S. Brig Lawrence was commissioned in honor of Captain Lawrence's service. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry commanded Lawrence in September 1813's Battle of Lake Erie. Once the Lawrence was disabled by enemy fire, Perry transferred to Lawrence's sister ship, Niagara. This is where Perry achieved victory. The formal British surrender occurred on the deck of the U.S. Brig Lawrence.
