This shipsmith shop was moved to Mystic Seaport from New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1944. James D. Driggs built his shop in 1885 where he made harpoons and other equipment for whaling ships. It's believed this building is the last surviving ironworks that supplied whaling ships in the 19th-century.
We handcraft this replica in 3/4" thick wood, and when you look closely you'll find Casper, our black cat mascot, waiting by the workshop doors. Made in our Wooster, Ohio workshop 600 miles due west of Mystic Seaport.
Did you know the Mystic Seaport Museum is the largest of its kind in the United States? Its 19-acres showcases over 60 historic buildings along with a collection of boats and ships representing the 1800's America.
