The National Road, aka the Cumberland Road was built between 1811 and 1837 from Cumberland, MD to Vandalia, IL connecting the Potomac and Ohio Rivers.

This 620-mile road was the first federally funded road in the USA and was a main path for thousands of settlers travelling West. Large portions of this road were incorporated into Interstate US Route 40 in the 1920s.

You can find these historic mile markers on the north side of the road marking the miles a traveler is from Cumberland, Maryland.

We handcraft this mile marker in 3/4" thick wood in our small Ohio workshop.

Look carefully and you'll see our black cat mascot, Casper, lounging at the base of the post.
